Participation in Music Therapy

(What I can expect and what I consent to)

As I participate in music therapy, I understand the following:

  • My music therapist is a Master’s level trained and Registered Music Therapist.

  • I will determine my level of participation based on my comfort level.

  • My experience in music therapy may range from relaxing and uplifting to uncomfortable or distressing.

  • I have the right to end music therapy sessions at any time. To conclude music therapy services I need to give 2 sessions’ notice to my music therapist (at least 2 weeks before the final session).

  • I can decide to participate in individual, peer, or small group music therapy sessions based on availability.

  • Music therapy sessions may include verbal discussion about my life and the musical experiences shared in the session.

  • I may choose to share personal issues and examine my feelings.

  • I may talk privately with my music therapist if I need to. I understand that my therapist will only respond to me during their work hours.

  • I understand that my music therapist will keep everything that is shared or said during sessions confidential with the following exceptions:

    • The therapist determines that I am potentially harmful or dangerous to myself or others or the therapist needs to speak with another health professional to make this determination.

    • The therapist determines that I am in imminent danger and therefore will inform my emergency contact, and/or appropriate health professionals and community services.

    • A judge in a court of law orders Raukatauri to disclose such information.

  • Confidential means that both the information I give, and my music therapist’s observations of our sessions, will be kept securely in a written record, in accordance with the Privacy Act (2020). I can ask about these notes if I have questions.

  • I understand that my therapist will make every effort to get my permission to communicate about me with other health professionals and community services to work toward holistic care for my health and wellbeing.

  • I understand that my therapist does not need my permission to communicate with other health professionals and community services if they believe there is an immediate danger to me or someone around me.

  • If I decide to seek psychotherapy or counselling, the music therapist can refer me to appropriate resources. They may encourage me to do so if necessary.
